Transitional Year Residency

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

The Transitional Year Residency offers an orderly, progressive, academic and clinically oriented program designed to provide residents with a broad scope of training. The program presents an opportunity for clinical applications of various specialized principles under the supervision and direction of board-certified physicians.

The program offers both inpatient and outpatient rotations and is flexible in design to allow for individual resident needs to be considered within the basic framework of the required services.

Residents accepted into the Transitional Year Residency program at SampsonRMC will participate in didactic sessions, clinic sessions (if applicable) and rotations that SampsonRMC provides. The primary method of education is for the trainee to experience hands-on patient care management.

Hobbies: I own a photography business and love taking photos! I also rowed in high school and college, so I try to stay in shape by going to the YMCA right next to SampsonRMC. I am a big fan of Formula 1 and have not missed watching a single event in over 5 years.

What I'm looking forward to most while at SampsonRMC: I'm looking forward to applying my skills in a rural environment which is a new experience for me. With my medical practice, I also hope to learn how to work independently and become the best general medicine physician I can be before continuing my training at Duke University for diagnostic radiology.

SampsonRMC offers residents full health insurance benefits. Residents have the choice between a traditional PPO Plan and HDHP plan. All benefit plans are effective upon hire date, thus there is no waiting period for benefit coverage. To review our current benefits package, click here.

The Traditional Rotating Internship is structured to provide clinical experience throughout the course of training. The internship is characterized by a broad range of supervised inpatient and outpatient clinical experiences. Each trainee will be exposed to a wide variety of patients throughout their training.

Interns are assigned rotations in general internal medicine, general surgery, family practice, anesthesia, obstetrics and gynecology (ambulatory gynecology), and emergency medicine. Interns are assigned two months of elective rotations which may include dermatology, neurology, endocrinology, pulmonary, hem/oncology, infectious diseases, nephrology, cardiology, radiology, GI, or a surgical sub-specialty.

Inpatient rotations consist of daily rounds with bedside teaching on inpatient rotations such as surgery and internal medicine.

Interns are exposed to pathology and radiology throughout their rotations and in didactic sessions. Anesthesiology is taught during the surgery rotation. Each intern is taught the components of airway stabilization, pre-anesthesia clearance, local anesthetic use, and monitoring of patients under anesthesia.

Osteopathic principles and practice are taught through monthly didactic instruction as well through the OPP/OMM practice in the teaching clinic.

Transitional Year residents are a vital part of our Medical Education community. Even though it is a one-year program, residents have access to all resources offered in our other residency programs. Residents are encouraged to participate in research with our Dermatology and Family Medicine programs and work closely with other programs to gain a broad base of knowledge.

A unique and important feature our Transitional Year residency program offers is two pre-matched positions to our Dermatology program. All students interested in applying to our Dermatology residency must also apply to our Transitional Year program.
